What is Drawing?
Drawing is the next stage after sketching. When drawing, an artist intends to create a final picture that is presentable or saleable.
The artist builds his idea further by Sketching, adding shades, light, highlights, etc., and creating a more presentable picture.
The artist also uses elements of Art like lines, shapes, forms, space, color, texture, and value to make his Art wholesome and meaningful.
When drawing, the art materials are graphite, pencils, colored pencils, charcoals, pastels, ink or pastels, etc. When drawing, other tools like blending stump, scale, eraser, and other tools create much richer artwork.
The artist also adds other techniques like shading, blending, hatching, etc., to improve his drawing.
The paper or the surface used for drawing is more expensive than the one we use for Sketching and high-quality smooth-surfaced paper.
In the drawing process, the artist only improvises the sketch by adding many values. A smaller number of corrections or rectifications are made in the drawing process.
Fewer corrections are made, as too many will spoil the final output. A good drawing will contain good details and not simple outlines.
The time taken to finish a drawing varies from 10 minutes to days. It depends on the type of drawing. Some simple drawing takes hours, and some drawing with intricate details will take months.
Certain pencil drawings where an artist draws the skin textures will take days or even months, unlike Sketching, which an artist can do in minutes and hours. Finishing a drawing may take longer.
Different types of drawings include Freehand drawing, Technical drawing, Functional Drawing, Real Portrait Drawing, Architectural Drawing, etc.
What is Sketching?
Sketching in visual arts is preliminary artwork, often made to capture the subject matter’s essence quickly. Sketches can be rough and refined and may be done with pencil, pen, charcoal, or other media. Sometimes, sketches are created as preliminary studies for a more finished work of Art.
In simple terms, it is the initial stage of drawing.
An Artist draws an outline using loose strokes with basic shapes and lines with art materials like graphite, pencil, ballpoint pen, or charcoal stick. While sketching, an artist avoids using any great tools and techniques.
He repeatedly uses simple lines and Quick strokes to present the essence of the thought in his mind. In Sketching, an artist tries to visually show his basic idea on paper and judge the result.
The paper used for Sketching may be low-quality, and I use cheap paper lavishly. On newsprint paper, you can use dry media like graphite, pencil, or charcoal sticks.
When the sketch is made on paper, it gives more clarity; if any correction needs to be done, he can correct it. As the artist does not spend much time creating the sketch, he can do quick modifications. It also gives an artist an idea of how the finished piece will be.
While sketching, an artist may use his eraser to undo mistakes fewer times than one uses when drawing. The main reason is sketching is the preliminary drawing stage and focuses more on drawing outlines and presenting the idea, design, or concept on paper.
Remember, there are few details in Sketching, and it is a bit rough and straightforward, but you will get what it is. Many artists leave a lot of unfinished sketches as once they are convinced with the idea, and they abandon the sketch. That’s the good thing about sketching.
We can also say Sketching is quick, and one does not spend much time creating one. One may sketch many times, and most sketches will never be seen or appreciated by others.

We use the term drawing very generic for any visual art form on paper. They do have several differences.

Some say Sketching is a form of drawing, but drawing is a method of creating a sketch. It’s a debatable topic, and every artist has their interpretation of the differences.
Sketching is like a brief note written on a rough piece of paper, usually in bits and pieces. On the other hand, drawing is like a complete essay or a novel; it is wholesome.
Even experienced artists initially start doing thumbnail sketches to get an idea of their finished drawings. After that, they start their detailed drawing.
In this post, I have mentioned a more broad outline or framework. Do not try to overthink this and complicate it. Some sketches by renowned artists are priceless now, and these are exceptions.
When you see an Artwork try to differentiate if they are sketching or drawing based on the framework mentioned above, both Sketching and drawing are Art, and they are complementary to each other.
You should know when to sketch and when to draw.
Keep drawing, Keep sketching.
